History

Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP) is the national professional organization of the Planners of the country established in 1974 for the advancement of Urban and Regional Planning which includes Rural Planning as well. Since the inception, the institute has been working to ensure planned and orderly development of the towns/cities and regions of the country through its various activities. BIP organizes seminars, workshops on various aspects of urban and regional/rural planning including transportation and environment; publishes journals and newsletters; arranges discussion meetings with stakeholders; and advises policy makers on various aspects related to physical planning and development control. BIP also sponsors planning exhibitions, workshops, round table discussions and studies carried out by planning students. BIP is a member of Commonwealth Association of Planners (CAP). BIP works in close cooperation with the Institution of Engineers Bangladesh (IEB) and Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB) in the greater interest of ensuring a safe, secure, and sustainable built environment in the country. BIP is committed towards development of cooperation with similar organizations in other countries for mutual benefit and advancement of the profession and professionals. BIP welcomes any enquires in this regard.

The objectives of BIP include the promotion of fellowship, co-operation and coordination among its members, the promotion of the art, science, practice and business of physical planning in all its branches, laying down and upholding professional code of ethics, promotion of research on planning, advising governmental and other organizations on planning and development control issues, advising planning schools, sharing professional ideas with other related agencies etc.
